George Washington Community High School Dollars for Scholars Selected for $10,000 Dr. Irving Fradkin Legacy Award to Impact Students

(November 15, 2023) - George Washington Community High School Dollars for Scholars is excited to announce that it has received a Dr. Irving Fradkin Legacy Renewable Scholarship Award of $10,000 from Scholarship America®, the nation's largest provider of private scholarships. With the cost of attending college continuing to rise, the grant will help the Dollars for Scholars® affiliate provide Renewal Scholarships to better serve Westside Indianapolis students. The local Dollars for Scholars was one of four affiliates selected nationally for an award.

Scholarship America created the Dr. Irving Fradkin Legacy Awards to give outstanding Dollars for Scholars more opportunity to provide impactful student support, honoring organization founder Irving Fradkin's bold vision for communities to join together and fund local scholarships.

The George Washington Community High School Dollars for Scholars was selected for the Award because our work best exemplified two vital principles on behalf of students:

  • Delivering impactful student support
  • Building and expanding community partnerships

For more than 60 years, Scholarship America has helped community groups and organizations across the nation establish and operate Dollars for Scholars. This network of locally based scholarship providers helps hometown students access and complete their college degrees, certifications or career preparation.

As a community network of Scholarship America, George Washington Community High School Dollars for Scholars will be able to provide local students greater access to private scholarships. With more than 60% of families using scholarships to pay for at least part of their students' college costs, these local awards are a critical piece of the financial aid puzzle:

  • they help students with financial need by filling in gaps in funding;
  • reduce the level of debt and hours students need to work while attending school;
  • give students more freedom to choose the school that fits them best; and
  • provide community encouragement as students strive to achieve their academic goals.
